Remove the "Freedom To Vote Act" Poison Pills That Suppress Voter Choice
I stand with the Green Party of the United States in rejecting the anti-democracy poison pills in S2747, the “Freedom To Vote Act”, which contains important election protection and voting rights measures but still undermines our right to build independent, grassroots parties and campaigns. I am asking you to amend the Freedom To Vote Act, S2747 (www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/senate-bill/2747/text ) to ensure the following: - Reinstate the Presidential Elections Campaign Fund - Return the party committee contribution to the original $5,000 max - Lower the qualifying threshold for matching funds for House candidates from 1,000 contributors and $50,000 in contributions Instead of trying to fool American voters, I join the Green Party in calling for legitimate reforms of the electoral system such as, - Fully-public campaign finance for every federal, state and local office through the Clean Money/Clean Elections model - Ranked Choice Voting in federal and statewide elections - Passing the Fair Representation Act that was introduced in 2018 and 2019, which would establish multi-seat, proportional representation for Congress by ranked-choice voting or amendment of HR 1 to include it. - Free and equal time on television and radio for all ballot-qualified candidates - Prohibition of corporations to spend on influencing elections - Elimination of all ballot access laws that discriminate against opposition parties - Abolishment of the Electoral College - Full felon re-enfranchisement upon completion of sentences - Restoration and strong enforcement of the Federal Voting Rights Act S2747 contains good provisions to combat voter suppression and enact incremental electoral reforms in the right direction. But democracy depends as much on the right to run for office in elections as the right to vote in elections. As the infamous Boss Tweed said “you can vote for anyone you like, as long as I get to pick the candidates!” The anti-multi party poison pills must be removed from S2747 before it can be passed. Instead of trying to fool American voters and eliminating alternative party voices, the Green Party calls for real reforms to democratize elections: The Fair Representation Act, introduced in 2018 and 2019, would enact Ranked-Choice Voting (RCV) and multi-member districts for Congressional elections, giving voters more power and more choice. Individual state governments should enact RCV for their elections, including the presidential election. Fully-public campaign finance for every federal, state and local office through the Clean Money/Clean Elections model now used in Arizona and Maine
