Grassroots Democracy

One of the Four Pillars of the Green Party is Grassroots Democracy.

The power of civic action is an antidote to the corporate control of so much of our lawmaking and regulating. The pervasive abuse imposed by corporate power increasingly undermines our democracy, but the Green Party seeks to rekindle the democratic flame.

To this extent, we believe in widespread electoral reform, corruption reduction measures, media reform to embrace free speech, and enforcement of human rights.

STOP THE 'VOTING RIGHTS" BILL THAT RESTRICTS VOTING

HR 1 is a bill sponsored by John Sarbanes of Maryland being positioned as a way to get money out of politics and to reform our electoral system, but Greens and our allies should be wary about supporting it.  As of the publication date of this petition, the bill has not yet been introduced in the House.

As reported in Black Agenda Report, "HR 1 pretends to be a voting rights bill, but is...intended to rebrand Democrats as the party of voting rights, despite their dismal non-record of struggle to protect or expand these rights."

The proposed bill contains a poison pill for opposition parties like the Green Party, because it "...quintuples the amount Green presidential campaigns are required to raise to qualify for federal matching funds from $5,000 in each of 20 states by the last day of 2019, to $25,000 per state in 20 states, and the deadline falls at the end of this very year." (Black Agenda Report)

The Green Party stands opposed to this bait-and-switch legislation that purports to improve access to voting while also dismantling our right to build opposition parties like ours.
Instead of trying to fool American voters, the Green Party calls for legitimate reforms of the electoral system.

Dear Member of the US House of Representatives,

I stand with the Green Party of the United States in rejecting HR1, a bait-and-switch piece of legislation that purports to improve access to voting while also dismantling our right to build opposition parties like ours.

Instead of trying to fool American voters, I join the Green Party in calling for legitimate reforms of the electoral system such as,

-Publicly-funded federal, state and local elections

-Free and equal time on television and radio for all ballot-qualified candidates

-Prohibition of corportions to spend on influencing elections

-Elimination of all ballot access laws that discriminate against opposition parties

-Abolishment of the Electoral College

-Full felony re-enfranchisement upon completion of sentences

-Restoration and strong enforcement of the Federal Voting Rights Act
